Trying to carry out all the books I got at the...
yabookscentral:
I’ve done this chin-carry many a time, and, sadly, it has ended this way.
I know that feel bro.
YA Readers in the Internet Age →
your-ya-story:
It’s finally here! Some of you may know I am currently working on a thesis about how the Internet affects the YA reading experience. As much of my opinion has been informed by my own experiences as a young adult reader, I am genuinely interested in others’ experiences as YA readers in the Internet Age. In order to learn more about other YA readers, I’ve created a questionnaire...

Day 16 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Living...
Before:
Just a corner of the room. The mess isn’t overwhelming here but it still has to be dealt with. (Bar is a mess b/c this was pre-Day 15.)
After:
Not much of a change. Took the blankets up to the laundry room and put the shoes in their new little cubbies.
I took this photo to show that the table area is still clean, because not only did I clean it but I am keeping it clean,...

Day 15 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Kitchen...
More work on the kitchen. This time it is that little bar thing.
Before:
Trash everywhere. Random doo-dads. Meds of all kinds, probably mostly used up or expired. Pedicure stuff. Cleaning materials. Coupons. Dirty dishes. Christmas decorations (!?).
After:
Not perfect, but better for sure. Trash tossed. Doo-dads re-homed or at least gathered in a dish. Meds put away (if not yet...

Day 14 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Living...
Today’s post is really all about shoes!
Before:
Plus: More shoe-related Befores from Day 11.
Our shoes “belong” in the upstairs bedroom closets, but they always migrate downstairs. It is a never-ending losing battle trying to keep the most frequently worn of them from constantly reappearing in the Living Room.
My new shoe philosophy: If you can’t beat ‘em, join...

Day 13 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Kitchen...
Working a little more on The Kitchen (finally).
Before:
Bag o’ goodies from a library conference (… in April), toilet paper, pedi tub, cat towel (for taking cat to the vet), headrests, cute platter that was on sale and f me if I can resist a sale on some plastic doodad with bluebonnets on, backpack (still with shit in it from CHRISTMAS), other assorted odds and ends, cat hair that...

Day 12 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Living...
Did that corner that was left over from the previous Living Room efforts. Hit the link for the before.
Filed away important papers and receipts, tossed old mail and expired coupons, hung up sweaters, corralled dog & cat toys, etc. etc. etc.
After:
Now it is a comfy little reading corner. And as you can see, there’s plenty of reading to catch up on.
Still to do:
1. The TV and...

Day 11 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Living...
Yeah, so, that whole “breaking the project down into 10-day increments, focusing on 2 areas of the home per time period” thing has sort of fallen by the wayside. I wanted to clear some fabric-cutting space and some movie-watching space in the living room instead of working on The Office or The Kitchen.
Before:
The above photos were taken before we went out of town for a long...

Day 10(ish) of the Happy Habitat Project: The...
Oh nooooooo ewewewewewewewwwwww.
Yeah, so, it is day 10 of the HHP but it has been far more than 10 days since I started. Got a little sidetracked there. Important business + leftover summer laziness basically.
ANYWAY.
I’ve been ever-so-slowly trying to get the things I’ve already dealt with re-dealt with. This kitchen is the hardest place to keep clean, you guys. I am the...

Day 9 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Office...
Yeah, so, more things from the Closet of Shame.
Before:
This time it is a giant bin.
Random cords, electronics, boxes, bags, decorations, keepsakes.
And more spilled battery acid! YAY!
After:
Trash disposed of, electronicish things added to the box o’ whatnots for G to take a look at later. Cords tied or stuffed in a container. I found my old collection of paper doll books! I...

Day 8 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Office...
Yet another box out of that damn closet.
Before:
This one was filled with trash, office supplies, wires, and other computer-y bits.
Oh, yeah, and spilled battery acid mixed with melted candy canes. I’m not even joking.
After:
We now have five staplers. FIVE. WTH.
(Anyone need a stapler?)
And a box that is still full of wires, but not much else. All the random little tools and...

Day 7 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Office...
So I skipped Friday. So what? It wasn’t like I was slacking, there was just a bunch of other stuff to do.
Back at it again today, though.
Before:
Another box from the closet.
I got a little help from a friend….
After:
My husband’s speakers kicked the bucket a little while ago and they still haven’t made their way out of the office. I don’t actually know...

Day 6 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Office...
I got sick of looking at la cocina, so it is back to the office! The Office Closet, actually.
Before:
A brief preview of the closet as a whole…
… and then the 1 little part I’m concentrating on for now.
So, yeah. The closet is terrifying b/c most of that stuff has just been sitting there since we moved here in, oh, like 2010. But I figure if I tackle it 1 little thing at...

Day 5 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Kitchen...
A continuation of The Kitchen.
Before:
You can see that the kitchen table is still clean. Mind, this was pre-cleaning for part 1 of The Kitchen. I focused on the area to the left of the stove, here: bills, other bits of mail, a few dishes, random spices, disorganized appliances, and you can’t see the old wine bottles gathering dust but they’re there.
After:
Not from the same...

Day 4 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Kitchen...
This kitchen is was way out of whack.
Before:
Most of those glasses have been there (or on my desk, or G’s desk, or the table, etc.) for months.
After:
All of my fav small appliances can now hang out together with the non-fridge veggies. Except for the toaster oven. That one is segregated because I am paranoid about fires. Even when it is not plugged in. Can’t help it.

Day 3 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Futon
Another office project. We’ve had this futon for ages.
Before:
Bits of trash, old homework, appliance parts, Christmas cards, tools, medicine, coins, and lots and lots of fur (the boys like to hang out here while G and I are on our computers).
After:
Stuff tossed that ought to have been tossed long ago, and the rest stored in the proper place. The worst of the furballs disposed of.

Day 2 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Table
Our table — like many tables — acts as a catch-all. Pretty much all the things are dumped on it forever.
Before:
See what I mean? All of the things forever. Most of those jackets and sweaters have been there since early spring.
This is less about the table and more about the open kitchen/dining/living area as a whole. You can see there’s still a lot of work to do. One...

Day 1 of the Happy Habitat Project: The Desk
I really wanted to clean off/out my desk to start with. It is where I spend the majority of my non-work waking hours, so I want it to be nice.
Before:
A sad state of affairs. Random papers EVERYWHERE. Wires galore. That butt blanket on the chair has been there for months. What you don’t see are the glass Dr Pepper bottles that had been congregating in the back corner over the last 6...

The Happy Habitat Project
So… I’ve been reading a lot about homemaking and cleaning and domestic bliss and that sort of thing lately (see: UFYH [N entirely SFW]). And I want to have a nice house.
What our house should be:
1. Comfortable
2. Organized
3. Beautiful
What our house should not be, but is:
1. A mess
Thus, the Happy Habitat Project.
I’m breaking the project down into 10-day increments,...
